Project Description:
The Southwest Livestock and Farm Association enables small and
limited-resource immigrant farmers to stay and prosper in their own
communities. Participating farmers have ranching and farming
experience, and include immigrant farmers (mostly from Mexico),
farmworkers, and small family farmers. These farmers want to support
themselves through their own farms rather than working as temporary
laborers for others. The Southwest Livestock and Farm Association
focuses on sustainable management practices, helping small farmers
integrate livestock into their farm operations while restoring and
preserving the land for future generations. The group supports young
and beginning farmers and allows new farmers to learn more about
farming, ranching, and marketing while preserving the environment. This
group received a grant from Heifer International in fall of 2004 to
provide training and livestock to participating farmers, and they are
working with the Hispanic Farmers Association to develop a cooperative
to market livestock, vegetables and grains throughout the Southwest and
possibly other regions.
Mission: To preserve small family farms while improving land management and to diversify farming operations.
