Project Description:
This woman, originally from
Liberia, is thrilled with her sweet
potato leaves, grown at T
roostwood Gardens in Kansas
City, Missouri.
Cultivate Kansas City was founded in the
fall of 2004 to promote urban farming in the Kansas City Metro area. It provides urban farmers and would-be farmers from different
backgrounds and nationalities with individualized support in all phases
of farm development, including site selection, infrastructure
development, crop production, organic certification, marketing and
business development. Currently Cultivate Kansas City is working and building
relationships with immigrant farmers from Asia and East Africa. It
also operates the Kansas City Community Farm, a 2-acre urban
demonstration farm producing certified organic vegetables for sale
through a CSA and at a farmers’ market.
In our work with both immigrant and US-born farmers, we hope to draw
on their diverse skills and experiences by inviting them to become
active participants in making urban farms stronger, developing new and
appropriate technologies and formulating local policy in support of
urban agriculture.
Cultivate Kansas City is also working with Professor of
Sociology, Dana Collins, at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, on
a research project investigating the sociological dimensions of the
immigrant farming experience. For more information on this project
please contact Professor Collins at 816-235-2525 or collinsdan@umkc.edu.
